in this debate. we forget sometimes because we talk about how mitt romney is down in the race but he's still got a chance. only down 3 points nationally in the journal/nbc poll. in key swing points he's pulling even in florida, down 1, closer in virginia, down 2, he's still down by 8 percentage points in our poll in the state of ohio, which is a problem for this reason. look at the map of swing states. if you look at the ones where mitt romney is running within 4 points of president obama, places like florida, virginia, iowa, missouri where he's ahead, north carolina where he's even or ahead, you add all those to the solid states for mitt montana and the leaning states for mitt romney, he's still only at 263 electorate votes. he needs to bring ohio or other swe swing state, nevada, new hampshire. he's got an unparallel opportunity tonight to come on stage with the president of the united states and make his case, larry. >> john, the wall street journal poll and others have shown that romney has closed the gap a little pit with president obama at least nationwide and some of the sw

debate. the president actually spoke for a little more than four minutes more than mitt romney spoke, 42:50 for the president. 38:32 for mitt romney. a pretty good night for mitt romney. expectations were so much higher for the president that he would come out swinging, but mitt romney clearly held his own, and all of the various issues, they went back and forth. we didn't hear some of the attack lines from the president, so many of us were expecting he would be making. neve heard him mention anything about the 47%, the controversial remark that mitt romney made in boca raton in a closed-door fund-raiser, didn't get him into the history at bain capital, exporting jobs. none of the issues of tax returns. spoke about the most important issues, economy, jobs, and all of what's going on. we're going to watch a scientific poll that we're doing right now to get the reaction of what going on, and we're going to see what that scientific poll says about who won this debate. we also had a focus group watching of independent voters, undecided voters who were there watching what was going

debate between governor romney of massachusetts and president obama. you see both men being greeted by their wives on stage. even this portion of the debate is negotiated ahead of time by the campaigns in terms of which members of their family will be joining them on stage. this is, these these are negotiated down to this level of detail. in terms of how the overall debate unfolded, i personally do not know who won this debate. i do feel that we saw this debate format die a very painful death on camera tonight. the contrast between the candidates was stylistic as much as substantive. president obama i think calm and basically explanatory tonight. governor romney, more hyper, and i don't mean that in a negative way, just sort of more amped, more assertive. and that manifests in a way that the debate format was just dismantled. the format and i think the moderator, with all due respect to mr. lehrer dismantled. this is one of those debates, you could predict the score more by time of possession in terms of who was speaking more. then you could by any other individual plays. let me bring

thought mitt romney showed great poise during the debate. he just looked overall more polished than obama did. i thought the moderating was great. people have to get their views across. i believe that obama during the debate concluded even more to me that he is not what we need over the next four years. he has talked about the same things for the past year during the campaign, which is providing more safety nets for lower income people, putting in more government regulations on small businesses and big businesses, he has not taken china seriously, taking american jobs and being a money manipulator. he has added so much to the national debt to that he promised to reduce. i know it is not all of his fault and the congress is to blame, too, but he is the guy that has to take charge and get people realizing we are on a path to destruction. i think we need a new president in 2012. >> will also take some tweets. karl rove says -- next is a viewer watching us from oklahoma who is a democrat. this is gary. >> thank you. i thought the president held up on mr. romney. mr. romney comes out and

debate who watched, romney not only won two to one but on the question of who cares about you and regular people which is the place that the obama campaign had been savaging him before the debate, romney's numbers were about 30. after the debate they were in the 60's, which is to say in this debate romney had two tasks. one was to explain why the president has failed and be very aggressive there that and then he had another task that sort of conflicted with the first in that he needs to be appealing enough that people would like him, find something worth voting for him about not just because they didn't like barack obama. well that number in the instant poll which those are fluky and shouldn't put too much emphasis on them but gives us inkling of where the currents are going. that's good for romney. i'll echo mike the campaign needed a pause in what was a slide. i think they got the pause and the question is now when you thank you about a new romney, he's had a lot of different iterations in his life. you can imagine the obama campaign trying to make sofg a mediocre debate will ju
